HDPE vs PPR-RCT: Two Pipes, Two Jobs
They fuse the same way and do completely different work. Here is how to keep them straight, and which machines run which.
Two materials, one joining method
HDPE and PPR-RCT are both thermoplastics joined by heat fusion: face the ends, heat them, press them together, and the joint becomes as strong as the pipe. That is where the similarity ends, because the two materials are specified for very different systems.
HDPE is the low-pressure workhorse. Think main water line distribution, raw water, rain harvesting and return water systems, mining, irrigation, conduit. It is flexible, tough, and lives underground across the West.
PPR-RCT is built for higher pressures and temperatures, and its home turf is hydronic systems: heating and chilled water piping in commercial buildings, central plants, and mechanical rooms. In the U.S. it arrives as three pipe brands, Aquatherm, NUPI Niron, and Aquatechnik, and our machines fuse all three.

Three ways to make the joint
Socket fusion is the PPR-RCT small-bore method, covering half inch through 4 inch pipe and the outlets that branch off it. The McElroy Spider 125 handles 2″ – 4″ socket joints, the Hornet and Hornet XL fuse outlets straight onto the main, and manual socket welders like the Ritmo R125Q cover the rest of the range. Here is the part your electrician will love: the heaters on these tools run on ordinary 110V. Inside an occupied building, that means fusing off receptacle power instead of hunting for 230V.
Butt fusion carries the big pipe, 4 inch through 24 inch, and here Ritmo takes the one-fleet approach: the same machine welds both HDPE and PPR-RCT, you just swap the clamp inserts for the material. The catch is power. Through 8 inch the machines run on 110V or 230V, at 12 inch they are 230V only, and above that you are into three phase. If your PPR-RCT job is big pipe and small power, tell us. Matching the machine to the building is exactly the sizing help we do.
Electrofusion is the HDPE fitting method. Couplings with the heating coil built in, welded by an Elektra S or Elektra M processor, covering fittings from half inch up to 12 inch on 110V or 230V. It is the standard way to put fittings on an HDPE system without setting up a butt fusion machine at every joint.
Running both pipes on one project
Plenty of jobs carry both systems: HDPE for the site water, PPR-RCT for the mechanical room. We can put both machines on your jobsite with the tooling for each material and walk your crew through the differences in procedure, and we will not pretend they are interchangeable, because they are not.
