Fusion Machine Generator Requirements
Most Rental Problems Are Power Problems
The machine shows up ready to work. The crew is ready to fuse. And the generator on site turns out to be the wrong voltage, too small, or already feeding three other tools. A day gets lost before the first joint goes in.
We see this more than any other rental issue, and it is entirely avoidable. Know your fusion machine generator requirements before the machine ships, and have the right power source on site and running when it arrives.
This guide covers what our butt fusion machines and electrofusion processors need for power, voltage, phase, amperage, and generator sizing, for jobsites across the western United States, from the Pacific Northwest to the desert Southwest. Generator Sizing Rules of Thumb
Running amps only tell part of the story. Three things drive generator sizing on a fusion job:
- Surge load beats running load. Heater plates and hydraulic pumps draw well above their running amperage at startup and during recovery. A good rule of thumb is a generator rated at roughly twice the machine’s running load.
- The heater plate is the big draw. A butt fusion heater holds around 400–450°F and cycles on and off to stay there. Every time it kicks back on, including right after you pull it from a joint, it pulls hard, and the generator has to absorb that without sagging.
- Undersized generators ruin joints. When voltage sags, the heater plate recovers slowly and unevenly. Melt patterns go inconsistent, heat cycles stretch out, and you can end up with a cold joint that looks acceptable at the bead and fails under pressure later. The right generator is cheap insurance on a weld you are about to bury.
Two more habits worth keeping. Give the fusion machine a dedicated generator instead of sharing power with saws, pumps, or the job trailer. And keep cords short and heavy-gauge, a long, light extension cord drops voltage just as effectively as a small generator does.
Single Phase or Three Phase
Most butt fusion machines through the 10″ class, and nearly all electrofusion processors, run on single-phase power. Any standard towable generator in the size range above will handle them, which keeps things simple on most water, sewer, and utility jobs.
Larger machines, roughly 14″ and up, are often three phase, typically 480V. Three-phase towable generators are common at rental yards across Washington, Oregon, California, and the Mountain West, but they are not the default unit at the counter. You have to ask for one specifically, and you should confirm the receptacle configuration matches the machine’s plug when you book it.
Electrofusion is its own case. Processors do not need much total power, but they are sensitive to voltage quality, so a stable mid-size generator beats a big, poorly loaded one. If you are fusing large-diameter electrofusion couplings, tell us, draw climbs with fitting size.
Where to Get a Generator
Here is the good news: the generator is the easy half of this problem. National rental networks have yards in nearly every market in the western U.S., from Seattle and Portland down through Boise, Salt Lake City, Denver, Las Vegas, and Phoenix. Whoever you already rent iron from can almost certainly put the right generator on your site.
