HDPE vs PVC, Ductile Iron, and Steel
An honest comparison from people who work with fused pipe every day: where HDPE earns its place, and where another material is still the right call.

Here’s the version you’d get from a contractor instead: every material on this list is a proven product, and the right one depends on the job. HDPE has real advantages that keep expanding its share of water, sewer, and utility work across the western U.S. It also has honest limits, and we’ll cover both.
Fused Joints: HDPE’s Biggest Advantage
PVC and ductile iron systems are joined with gasketed bell-and-spigot connections, and steel with welds or mechanical couplings. Every gasketed joint is a potential leak path and a potential pull-apart point, which is why those systems need thrust blocks or restraint hardware at fittings and bends.
Fused HDPE is different in kind. Butt fusion melts the pipe ends into one continuous piece, so a fused pipeline has no gaskets and is fully restrained end to end. Water systems built with fused HDPE are commonly designed around zero allowable leakage, where gasketed systems are designed around an allowable leakage rate. Over a few decades of service, that difference is enormous.
Flexibility and Seismic Performance
HDPE bends. It can be cold-bent to a generous radius, follow rolling terrain with fewer fittings, and tolerate ground movement that would break a rigid pipe or open a gasketed joint. That matters in the West: seismic zones along the West Coast, shifting soils in Nevada and Arizona, and frost heave across the Mountain West all move pipe around.
Ductile iron and steel are strong but rigid, and PVC is stiffer and less strain-tolerant than HDPE. When the ground shifts, a fused HDPE line is generally the one you worry about least.
Corrosion
HDPE and PVC share this advantage: neither one corrodes, tuberculates, or needs linings, wraps, or cathodic protection. Metallic pipe does. In aggressive western soils, corrosion protection for ductile iron or steel is a real line item at installation and a real maintenance program for the life of the pipe.
Lifecycle Cost
On material price per foot, PVC often wins the upfront comparison, and that’s worth saying plainly. HDPE’s case is the total picture:
- Long fused strings mean fewer joints to assemble in the trench.
- Leak-free joints cut water loss and repair mobilizations for decades.
- No corrosion program, ever.
- Fused strings open up trenchless installation, which can eliminate most of the excavation cost on the right job.
The one cost HDPE adds is fusion equipment and a trained operator. Renting removes most of that barrier. You don’t have to own a fusion machine to bid HDPE work, and that’s exactly the gap we fill.
Trenchless Work
For horizontal directional drilling, pipe bursting, and slip lining, fused HDPE is the default choice. A fused string can be assembled above ground, tested, and pulled in as one continuous, fully restrained length that tolerates the bending and pulling loads of installation. Gasketed products have made progress in trenchless applications, but fused HDPE remains the standard, especially for HDD.

Where HDPE Isn’t the Pick
Honesty helps everyone here, so:
- Hot service. HDPE’s pressure rating drops as operating temperature rises. For hot fluids, steel wins.
- Very high pressures. Above the range HDPE pressure classes cover, steel is the answer.
- Hydrocarbon-contaminated ground. Polyethylene can be permeated by some petroleum compounds, so contaminated soils call for a different material or a protective design.
- Deep or heavily loaded gravity lines where stiffness rules the design. Rigid pipe can be the simpler engineering answer in some of those conditions.
- The spec says otherwise. If the engineer specified PVC or ductile, that’s the material. Bid it and move on.
Everywhere else, fused HDPE deserves a hard look, and the equipment question shouldn’t be what decides it.
